From clock times to working time

Enter start and end times, choose whether the shift ends the same day or the next day, and enter any break minutes to subtract. Leave breaks at zero if you are not deducting one. The tool does not decide whether a break should be paid.

A shift from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM the next day lasts 8 hours and 30 minutes. Subtracting a 30-minute break leaves 8h 0m, or 8 decimal hours.

Minutes stay exact

Clock hours are converted to minutes. An overnight shift adds 1,440 minutes before subtracting the starting time and breaks. The result retains whole minutes; decimal hours are rounded to two places. Ten minutes is about 0.17 hours.

One shift can span up to 24 hours. End before start needs Next day, and break time cannot exceed the shift. Clock changes and time zones are excluded because clock labels alone do not identify an instant. The Temporal time-zone guide explains repeated and missing local times.

For a regular pay estimate, the Hourly to salary calculator uses your hourly rate, weekly paid hours, and paid weeks. A single shift is not transferred as a weekly schedule.

FAQs

How do I enter an overnight shift?

Choose Next day for End day. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM the next day is 8 hours and 30 minutes before breaks.

What is the difference between 8h 30m and 8.5 hours?

They are the same duration. Decimal hours divide minutes by 60, so 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, not 0.30.

What if start and end times match?

Same day gives zero hours. Next day gives 24 hours. The end-day choice makes that difference explicit.

Does it account for daylight saving time?

No. It uses clock labels only. Choose 24-hour time if you prefer it; the default uses AM and PM. A shift crossing a clock change can have a different actual duration; check dated time records for that situation.

For example: "Count the weekdays until a date, without holidays."
