    Your grade so far

Most classes weight their categories: homework might be 20% of the grade, quizzes 30%, the midterm 25%, and the final 25%. To get your grade before the final, multiply each score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the weights you’ve used:

Category Score Weight Score × weight
    Homework 92% 20 1,840
    Quizzes 85% 30 2,550
    Midterm 78% 25 1,950
    Total 75 6,340

6,340 divided by 75 gives 84.53%, a B on the common scale. The weights only add up to 75 because the final isn’t graded yet, so this is your grade on the work done so far.

If your class counts points instead, enter scores like 17/20 and leave the weights empty: your grade is all the points you earned divided by all the points possible. If you leave the weights empty and use percentages, every score counts the same.

What you need on the final

The final counts for its weight, and everything before it counts for the rest. So the score you need is:

Needed = (grade you want − grade now × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

With 84% now and a final worth 25%:

    • For a B- (80%): (80 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (80 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 68%
    • For an A- (90%): (90 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 108%, which isn’t possible without extra credit

The calculator also shows where you’d land with a 0 on the final (63% here), so you know your floor.

    The letter scale

    Letter Percent Letter Percent
    A+ 97 and up C+ 77 to 79
    A 93 to 96 C 73 to 76
    A- 90 to 92 C- 70 to 72
    B+ 87 to 89 D+ 67 to 69
    B 83 to 86 D 63 to 66
    B- 80 to 82 D- 60 to 62
    F below 60

This is the letter scale used here, not a universal school policy. Check your course syllabus for grade boundaries, category weights, and rounding rules. Your instructor or school gradebook is the place to resolve a difference with this estimate.

    Limits

The calculator can’t know about curves, dropped scores, or extra credit. If your teacher drops the lowest quiz, leave it out. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.

    FAQs

How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?

Multiply each category's score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total of the weights. Homework 92 at 20%, quizzes 85 at 30%, and a midterm 78 at 25% gives 6,340 divided by 75, which is 84.53%.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

That usually means some work isn't graded yet, like the final. The calculator divides by the weights you entered, so the result is your grade on the work done so far.

My class uses points, not percentages. What do I enter?

Enter each score as points, like 17/20, and leave the weights empty. The calculator adds up all the points you earned and divides by all the points possible.

What score do I need on my final to pass?

Choose "Final exam", enter your grade now and how much the final counts for. The table shows the score you need for each letter, including D- at 60% on this calculator’s scale. Check your syllabus for the grade needed to pass.

Why does it say my grade is out of reach?

If the score you'd need is above 100%, even a perfect final can't get you there. The calculator shows the best you can finish with. Extra credit or a curve can change this, so ask your teacher.

What percent is an A, B, or C?

This calculator uses plus and minus grades: A starts at 93%, B at 83%, and C at 73%. A-, B-, C-, and D- start at 90%, 80%, 70%, and 60%. The full scale is shown below. Your school's cutoffs may differ.
